Frequently Asked Questions

(By potential students)

Q

How do I get certified in Watsu (Healing Dance, Waterdance, et.al)?

A

Watsu and other forms of aquatic therapy including Healing Dance and Waterdance are certified by WABA (Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association).  Certification requirements can be found on their website at www.waba.edu.

Note* If you are already certified in a therapy that requires touch, including fitness and yoga, you may be qualified under the “license to touch” category. If you are uncertain whether your certification qualifies you inquire into WABA at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Q

Where can I find class listings?

A

  •  In Australia,  www.aquatic-bodywork.com.au.  Most WABA certified classes held in Australia are listed here. Classes are held at privately owned facilities and taught by WABA certified instructors.
  • In New Zealand,  www.watsu.org.nz.
  • Worldwide classes listed on the WABA directory at www.waba.edu.

Q

Where do I get insurance?

A

International Institute for Complementary Therapies (IICT) offers professional insurance to Watsu practitioners. They have said they will include Healing Dance as an insured modality as soon as there are enough practitioners to warrant a category. For more details contact IICT on their website at www.iict.com.

Q

Where can I find a practitioner in my area?

A

www.aquatic-bodywork.com.au or go to the worldwide directory at www.waba.edu to locate a practitioner.

Q

Do I have to take Basic Watsu before Watsu 1?

A

It’s not required but recommended.

Q

Does it matter that I haven’t received a session before I do the training?

A

It’s highly recommended that you receive at least one session before you begin training. This gives you a sense of what the person in your arms may be experiencing.

Q

I want to take a Watsu 2 (or 3) or Healing Dance and there aren’t any classes being offered at this time. What can I do?

A

Because aquatic therapy is still being discovered in Australia classes tend to be small and student driven. If there is a class and/or teacher you’d like to experience, contact your nearest facility owner and talk with them about organizing a class. Or contact the instructor directly.

Q

What is the ideal pool specifications in which to practice Aquatic Therapy?

A

A pool depth range from about 1 meter to 1.38 meters is adequate for most practitioners.

The pool temperature is ideally between 33-34 degrees Celsius (93-94 Fahrenheit).

Q

Where can I practice?

A

Check with your local pools first to see if they have a hydrotherapy pool in which you could practice. Some require insurance while others are happy for you to practice as a student.  Since most people aren’t aware of Watsu and other forms of aquatic therapy, it may be necessary for you to explain what Watsu is. There is a lot of supportive evidence as to the therapeutic benefits of Watsu which can be utilized when speaking to pool owners.

You can also ring private pool owners (contact details found at www.aquatic-bodywork.com.au) who offer WABA certified classes and ask if they hire out their pools to students and/or practitioners.

Many practitioners choose to build their own Watsu pool at their home and set up a private practice. Always check first with your local council on laws regarding building a pool and running a business from home.

Q

Where can I find other people to practice with?

A

Facility owners and practitioners listed on this site are both good resources for connecting with community.

Q

Where do I get started?

A

Receive a session. Read through the LINKS on this website, read through the WABA www.waba.edu website.  Google any of the forms of aquatic therapy that interests you -Watsu, Healing Dance, Waterdance, Aquatic Integration et. al. and learn as much as you can.
